At the time when Central Europe becomes more closely integrated into international commerce, new markets take shape for the three ports on the northeastern part of the Adriatic Sea : Trieste,in Italy, Koper in Slovenia, and Rijeka in Croatia. The three port sites offer the most direct access from Central Europe to the great world sea trade routes which use the Suez Canal. Creation of the three ports is directly tied to the political break-up of the Istrian Peninsula, but with more flexible border openings, the port function that has been up to then thwarted by history is expected to blossom. Though still with modest tonnage levels compared to their counterparts in the North Sea and the Western Mediterranean, these ports, given European perspectives and recent dynamism tied newions about logistical and commercial functions, are in big change ahead.
